The Masai Mara has three distinct types of accommodation zones, each with its own tradeoffs:
Inside the National Reserve
Lodges inside the 1,510 sq km reserve put you closest to prime game territory. These include Governors' Il Moran, Entim Mara Camp, andBeyond Bateleur Camp (#1 Hotel in the World 2025), JW Marriott Masai Mara, and The Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara. The tradeoff is that night drives, off-road driving, and walking safaris are generally restricted inside the reserve itself.
Private Conservancies
Bordering the reserve, conservancies like Olare Motorogi (home to Mahali Mzuri and Mara Plains Camp) and Olderkesi (Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp) enforce strict vehicle limits, allow night drives and walking safaris, and feel far more exclusive. A smart pick for travelers who want fewer crowds and richer experiences.
Mara Triangle & Escarpment
The western section of the reserve features fewer vehicles and dramatic escarpment views. Angama Mara and Sanctuary Olonana are the standout options here, with some of the most photogenic landscapes in East Africa.

How to get to the Masai Mara
You have two options for reaching the Masai Mara from Nairobi: by road or by light aircraft. Most travelers combine both — flying in and driving back (or vice versa) for variety.
By Air (Recommended)
Daily scheduled flights depart Wilson Airport (WIL) in Nairobi to multiple airstrips across the Mara including Musiara, Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Mara Serena, and Angama. Flight time is 40–50 minutes. Expect to pay $200–$350 per person one-way depending on season and airstrip. Operators include AirKenya, Safarilink, and Mombasa Air Safari.
By Road
The drive from Nairobi to the main entry gates (Sekenani, Talek, Oloololo) takes 5–6 hours each way via Narok. It is scenic but long — not recommended for shorter trips. Most clients who choose road travel do so for the cultural stops at Rift Valley viewpoints and Narok town.
International flights to Kenya
International travelers fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. Direct long-haul routes include New York (Kenya Airways), London (Kenya Airways, British Airways), Amsterdam (KLM), Paris (Air France), Doha (Qatar), Dubai (Emirates), and Istanbul (Turkish Airlines). From NBO, a short domestic transfer to Wilson Airport (WIL) connects you to the Mara airstrips.
Budget $900–$1,500 round-trip from the US East Coast, $1,200–$1,800 from the US West Coast, and £550–£900 from the UK, depending on season. July–August and December holidays are peak pricing.
